Research pt 1.
Hello,
In this post, I would like to introduce the part of my research which I claimed to create my project.
One of the first artists I researched was Eleanor Antin, and one of her the most famous works: CARVING: A Traditional Sculpture (1972). Antin recreated this work in 2017 and called it CARVING: 45 Years Later.
According to Liebert (2016) "Eleanor Antin has created a body of work that explores history, contemporary culture, and identity from a feminist perspective.". Before her carrier in visual art, she was a poet and an actress.
Antin was one of the first artists to create in the trend of feminist art, which made her a frequent inspiration for other women creating in this trend. CARVING: A Traditional Sculpture captivated me in its simplicity and ingenuity. The author blurs the border between traditional photography and sculpture. I was very interested in the name of the work because although it is not a traditional sculpture, Antin used her sense of humour calling it "Traditional Sculpture".
Looking at the pictures, I feel that the author, using her body to create a work, wanted to show that she is not ashamed of her body even though she decided to diet and travel in losing weight. She shows her body as an art, not a sexual and vulgar object.
The photographs are made in black and white, arranged in four columns, which is called the conceptual art style. The woman is located in the centre of the photograph, in each column in a different pose, however, always in the centre. The light in each photo is also identical, which makes the author's full professionalism palpable.
Thanks to her, I learned that photography does not have to be strictly treated in the field of photography, but you can also go beyond the limits. Antin emerged from the frame of normal and even artistic photography and created something like the sculpture as the name implies, which is a huge inspiration for me
